A Quirk Hotel Wedding: Michelle + Turner

From the bright love of their families to the design touches curated by Michelle’s expertise (she’s a photographer AND an art director…clearly a woman after our hearts), it was a wedding that came together effortlessly. We could photograph Michelle & Turner for the rest of forever, and never tire of it.  It was an honor to document such a sweet occasion, and the perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day!

Michelle started her morning in the luxurious bridal suite of the Quirk Hotel, where natural light & modern touches made every moment gorgeous.

Michelle’s fine art background was expressed throughout everything, especially in her diy bouquets, an elegant nod to the mix of architectural found throughout the venue.

Michelle’s talented make-up artist transformed a beautiful woman into a breathtaking bride. All while keeping to a timeline, which is like pure gold on a wedding day…

Michelle & Turner chose to have in intimate ceremony that blended elegant design touches with a nod to tradition, making their promises under a  custom-made Chuppah .  If you’re not familiar with Jewish wedding traditions, this wedding canopy  is a beautiful symbol of the home the couple will share together.

A Stylish Wisconsin Wedding: Jesse & Laura

Jesse & Laura are two of the most hospitable and loving people you’ll ever meet, and every moment of their wedding day showcased their generosity. From serving their guests the cake themselves to showering their wedding party with thoughtful gifts, it’s easy to tell why these two are so loved by their family and friends.  I felt lucky to be trusted with documenting their beautiful love story.

The morning started at Jesse’s sisters home, with of a fabulous dress and a strong cup of coffee. Her stunning gold dress was handmade just for her, and it couldn’t have been more perfect! Laura and her bridesmaids made photographing prep a blast, and even trusted me enough to dress the bride in the pretty light of the back patio. As you can see, it paid off in spades…..

We’re not sure who was more excited about the vows, the bride and groom, or Jesse’s handsome son Brandon!stevens_point_wi_wedding_23

It’s important to note that the couple’s recessional song was “Everything is Awesome” from the lego movie. It was so PERFECT, and you can’t help but melt to see Brandon peering over their shoulders as friends and family pelt them with rice & applause!

stevens_point_wi_wedding_14This might be a good time to mention that instead of traditional lawn games, these two had an axe throwing station set up. Yes, you read that right; don’t worry, it was monitored by a professional. Talk about a fun way to relieve some of that wedding planning stress!!
stevens_point_wi_wedding_18Jesse and Laura trusted me to steal away for a few moments during dinner and capture some of the golden light that falls over the river as the sun goes down…they needed no prompting to look great together; with these two is clearly comes naturally!  stevens_point_wi_wedding_16stevens_point_wi_wedding_15stevens_point_wi_wedding_17
The rest of the night was filled with delicious mexican food, house made margaritas,  and toasts to the happy couple.  Laura’s sisters flew all the way from their home in Iceland, and together they delivered a perfect speech to celebrate the bride.stevens_point_wi_wedding_24stevens_point_wi_wedding_27stevens_point_wi_wedding_28

A Mountain Airbnb Wedding: Nissa & Mike

On a Saturday that was forecast to be filled with downpours and storms, Nissa and Mike hoped for the best. Better than best; what they got was a gorgeous mountain side wedding day, filled with perfectly soft light and plenty of love to go around.  Nissa had planned a ceremony that was not only was it one of the sweetest we’ve ever seen,  she made it look effortless. We know and love Nissa from our days in art school, and true to form, her wedding was nothing short of magical. Air bnb wedding photography

Putting on your wedding dress: 6 tips for beautiful photos

richmond virginia wedding photographers
We like to say that putting on your wedding dress is the moment where it all becomes real. You’ve spent the morning getting your hair and make-up done, hopefully enjoying a glass of bubbly with your closest girls. When you step into your gown, it’s usually when the first happy tears of day start flowing, and we love capturing this sweet moment as it unfolds.  Here are a few things our wedding experience has taught us; hopefully it can help you get the most out of your dressing photos!

1. Have your Bridesmaids put on their dresses first.  Your girls are an important part of your story! They’ll be framing you as they help you into you gorgeous gown. Help glam up your first moments as an official bride by having your ladies  looking fabulous along with you! When you see your images, you’ll be so glad you did. As a bonus, the color will look great if you choose any of these images your wedding album.

2. Tidy up! Actually, since you’re the bride, you should have someone do this for you. A designated prop stylist, if you will. We’re even happy to pitch in! You’ll want the focus to be on you and your dream dress, not the make up, shoes, purses, and all the other goodies that come with getting ready.   If straightening up the area is too much, perhaps you can move to a different room. We’ve had brides get dressed in hallways, on porches, even in a private backyard to avoid the clutter!

3. Get dressed near a window. Your photographer will love you for doing this! The natural light shining in will give you an extra glow and make for beautiful images. If window light isn’t available, ask your photographer where the best light in the room is.

4. Save your jewelry for last. Your photographer wants to get great shots of you as you put on your jewelry. These details are the icing on the cake, and since you’ve set the stage for everything fabulous, this is the perfect time to take care of the little things! And, with your ladies standing by, you’ll have lots of help with things like putting on your necklace and clasping your bracelet. You may also want to have help putting on your shoes; this can be a fun photo opportunity for all of your bridesmaids to surround you and help with the final touch.

5. Keep smiling. Not a forced-for-the camera smile, but just a relaxed and feeling happy smile. We know it’s easy to make funny faces while you’re trying to make sure every thing is laced just so, but let your bridesmaids worry about buttons and lacing while you take the moment in.

6. Have a full length mirror handy.Even better if you have a freestanding mirror that can be positioned near where you are! Now is the first time you’ll be able to see yourself as a full, head-to-toe Bride. It’s a very unique moment, and  one you’ll want to cherish. You have full permission to admire yourself today, because you look AMAZING!

Bonus Tip: If modesty is a concern, speak with your photographer beforehand. We have creative ways of respecting your privacy, keeping you comfortable, and still photograph these sweet moments.

Brooke & Tom: A Navy Wedding at Jasmine Plantation

It was the perfect spring day at Jasmine Plantation for Tom and Brooke’s outdoor ceremony.  When they promised to stay true and keep their love strong, as their jobs took them oceans apart from one another, even us veteran wedding photographers get teary.  Being so close to Memorial Day, it was extra special to be able to spend the day with this couple and their decorated family.  Brooke’s million dollar smile made her new husband grin from across the room.  Congratulations to you both!

Katherine & John: an Elegant DC Wedding

Katherine and John had the kind of day that makes us love shooting weddings; plenty of sunshine, lots of fabulous DC locations, and an undeniable love for each other. We had such a hard time narrowing down our favorites, because with these two, every moment felt special. From their choice to do a spend the day together to the thoughtful gifts they exchanged, everything felt like it was so them.

We started the morning at a hotel in Arlington, where Katherine dressed with her girls, as John enjoyed some leisurely time with his groomsmen. They opted for a first look, which meant we had an entire afternoon of photos; a true luxury on any wedding day!Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos Top of the Town DC Wedding Photos

We can say with out hesitation that Nick and Val are one of the sweetest couples we have ever worked with. Embassy Row Wedding: Sara + Ahmed

sara_ahmed_wedding001It was the type of DC morning every bride hopes for; warm, but not hot, with plenty sunshine to go around.   Sara planned a generous amount of time for hair and makeup, making the morning feel down right luxurious.  As she prepared to meet her husband, she glowed with anticipation. Because Sara and Ahmed were married in a private ceremony just a day earlier, this day was set aside to be a celebration of their love and commitment.  It was beginning with a first look, followed by a photographers dream come true: two full hours for formal photos, including a limo trip to the DC monuments!

Whitney + Braden: A Seaside Love Story

She knew leaving her home in Virginia to pursue a career in Savannah would be the breath of fresh air she needed; what she couldn’t know was that the love of her life would be there; that she would meet him before she even had a place to live, that he would boldly asking her to go out for a drink even though they were strangers, and that ultimately, he would steal her heart.  If there is any one who deserves to have her heart stolen by a handsome coastie, it’s Whitney. Whitney is the kind of friend everyone should have; she always remembers birthdays, calls just to say hello, and will do anything to help her people out. Braden is her perfect match; witty, smart, and equally loving, you could say he completes her.

On New Year’s Eve, Whitney and Braden gathered their closest friends and family on the beach to share in their happiness. This wasn’t just a pretty destination; they chose the Florida Keys for the part it plays in their story. Braden was stationed in the Keys when they were first dating; they shared many many long sunny days on the sand and romantic evening dinners, complete with conch fritters. Their seaside vows were perfection, and the ocean breeze seemed to celebrate into the night along with their guests, who danced the night away under the stars. Here are just a few favorites….many more to come!
